PALMETTOPRIDE HONORS 2008 GRANT RECIPIENTS
Columbia, SC – PalmettoPride hosted an Appreciation Luncheon today at Seawell's in Columbia for recipients, Prideways Sponsors and Legislators. The statewide anti-litter organization presented grant checks to recipients, recognition plaques to Prideways sponsors, and a special award to Don Arnold, Director of Spartanburg County Environmental Enforcement. The PalmettoPride Grants Program awards groups to initiate programs that comply with PalmettoPride's four-pronged approach to litter eradication: education, enforcement, awareness and pickup. Grants include: Community Pride, Keep South Carolina Beautiful, Enforcement, Challenge for the Environment and Tree. PalmettoPride awarded $463,185 in grants to 133 groups. The majority of the grants belong to the Community Pride category. Palmetto Prideways is a public-private partnership where businesses sponsor two-miles of the interstate for bi-monthly cleanups by SC Department of Corrections inmate crews. As a result of this innovative program, litter on our highways has been reduced by 41% in 7 years. The Prideways sponsors were recognized for their leadership in litter reduction. Don Arnold was awarded with the PalmettoPride Enforcement Committee Award of Excellence by Lt. Chris Cowan of Richland County Sheriff's Department for his years of dedicated service, commitment and outstanding leadership to public service and quality of life in South Carolina. Cowan is Chairman of the Enforcement Committee. The Enforcement Committee and the Litter Control Association assist PalmettoPride on enforcement programs and issues. PalmettoPride is the state's anti-litter and beautification organization dedicated to reducing litter and promoting beautification. We will accomplish this by using a 4-pronged approach to reducing litter: education, enforcement, awareness and pickup. ###
