Volunteers Needed for a Fun-Filled Morning Cleaning Our National Treasure

Columbia, SC – PalmettoPride and the Sumter National Forest again team up to protect environmental resources. On Saturday, May 31, 2008, volunteers are needed to clean up illegal dumpsites and litter on Lick Fork Lake, Forks Trail Head, Modoc Trail, Edgefield Work Center (283) and boat landings on Strom Thurmond Lake.

“Our partnership with PalmettoPride has been rewarding,” said Anne Kiser, district ranger on the Long Cane Ranger District. “In 2004, 20 tons of trash was removed from 18 acres on the Sumter National Forest, and I am confident that this upcoming cleanup will be just as successful.”

Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. for registration and orientation at the National Wild Turkey Federation located at 770 Augusta Road, Edgefield, SC. The cleanup will begin at 9 a.m. and will end at noon. Supplies and lunch will be provided for all volunteers.

Business partners participating in the event are: YONCE FORD-MERCURY, INC., Village Grill and the National Wild Turkey Federation.

To sign up to volunteer for this event or for more information, please contact Debbie Cohea at PalmettoPride, 803-758-6034 or at dcohea@palmettopride.org.

The mission of the USDA Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the Nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. For more information on the Sumter National Forest, please visit www.fs.fed.us/r8/fms.
