WOFFORD TERRIERS ARE GOING GREEN

The College Offers Recycling at the Stadium

Columbia, SC – Wofford College introduces recycling during home football games in an effort to reduce litter and create a greener campus.   On November 8, 2008, for the Wofford-Citadel game, there will be recycling bins in and around Gibbs stadium for all visitors to use.

Wofford became the fifth institute of higher learning to receive the PalmettoPride Collegiate Recycling Grant that assists colleges and universities to establish recycling programs at sporting events.

“We are excited to join other schools in South Carolina in this recycling initiative through PalmettoPride.  Our campus is already very active in the recycling effort and expanding this to our football tailgating areas makes recycling for those visiting our campus very convenient,” said Lenny Mathis, Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Promotions, Wofford College.

PalmettoPride provides recycling bins, signage and t-shirts.  The bins will be placed around the stadium and will be marked to receive plastic, glass, and aluminum.  Wofford will be responsible for coordinating the logistics of recycling, including collection and removal of recyclable materials.

The grant is designed as a two-year program, where the school brings together environmental service, athletics and volunteers to increase awareness of the program, reduce litter and change behavior that creates litter. Previous recipients include USC, Clemson, SC State and Coastal.
