ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS RECEIVE AWARDS FOR SERVICE AND PROGRAMS
ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS RECEIVE AWARDS FOR SERVICE AND PROGRAMS Two State Organizations Present Awards at Annual Conference Columbia, SC – Keep South Carolina Beautiful (KSCB) and South Carolina Litter Control Association (SCLCA) presented 16 awards to statewide leaders in litter prevention, enforcement and beautification during their annual conference in North Myrtle Beach, SC last week. KSCB presented 6 affiliates with a Gold Level Affiliate Recognition Award. This award recognizes Keep America Beautiful, Inc. (KAB) affiliates who fulfill all requirements of KAB and coordinate successful programs in the areas of litter prevention, waste reduction and beautification. The affiliates that received this award are Keep Charleston Beautiful, Keep Dorchester County Beautiful, Keep the Midlands Beautiful, Keep North Charleston Beautiful, KOBA and Keep Williamsburg Beautiful. KSCB also presented two Outstanding Leadership Awards. The Community Leader of the Year award went to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church – “Stewards of God's Creation” affiliated with KOBA. The Program of the Year award went to Keep Charleston Beautiful for “Clean City Clara”. SCLCA presented six regional awards to officers and volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty. These awards recipients represent litter control officers, volunteer leaders and community improvement leaders who lead by example: cleaning up trash, coordinating volunteers, and promoting efforts of litter control enforcement. The winners are as follows: Upper Region Leadership Award: Doreen Montepara Upper Region Community Leadership Award: Homeland Park Community Task Force Central Region Leadership Award: Sgt. Freddie Gilbert, Sumter Co. Sherriff's Office Central Region Community Leadership Award: Amanda McNulty, Clemson Ext. Lower Region Leadership Award: Ranger Stan Stanley, Camp Moultrie Lower Region Community Leadership Award: Town of Reevesville SCLCA Board of Directors presented two statewide awards. The President's Award went to Herbie Christmas with Florence Co. Environmental Services. The Senator David L. Thomas Award went to Lance Corp. J.B. Parker with the State Highway Patrol. - more - KSCB and SCLCA have held a joint annual conference for several years. Enforcement is an essential element in reducing litter and community improvement. Leaders from both fields learn from understanding each other's approach to litter eradication. The support they give to each other is invaluable. The conference was held at the Avista Resort in North Myrtle Beach from February 11 – 13, 2009. # # #
