LITTER CONTROL GETS BOOST FROM INCOME TAX CHECKOFF OPTION
SC Residents Can Contribute to Cleanup on Personal Income Tax Forms Columbia, SC – With tax season underway, PalmettoPride, the your anti-litter and beautification organization, wants South Carolinians to help SC law enforcement officers by contributing $1.00 or more to the Litter Control Enforcement Fund on their personal income tax returns. All funds generated by contributions go to PalmettoPride's Enforcement Grant. This grant provides law enforcement agencies across the state with necessary equipment used to document litter violations. Individuals filing 1040 and 1040A tax forms can contribute any amount to the Litter Control Enforcement Fund. Individuals need to refer to SC Department of Revenue's Contribution for Check-offs form I-330 to donate money to this cause. Enforcement of state and local litter laws is an essential element of litter prevention. The effects of litter stretch far beyond public eyesores. Litter harms the environment, property values, economic development and is dangerous to pedestrians and drivers. According to the Broken Windows theory, litter is considered a nuisance crime along with vandalism that leads to social and community breakdown which leads to higher crime rates. Litter gets into our watersheds through non-point source pollution and leaches toxins into our water and endangers animals. PalmettoPride is a statewide non-profit dedicated to reducing litter in South Carolina and promoting beautification in our communities. Their focus is a 4-pronged approach: education, enforcement, awareness and pickup. For more information on PalmettoPride, please contact www.palmettopride.org. # # #
