CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 2009

Sumter National Forest Cleanup Planned in Newberry County

Columbia, SC – Volunteers are needed for a cleanup in the Enoree Ranger District of the Sumter National Forest on Saturday, April 25, 2009. Volunteers are needed to clean up illegal dumpsites and litter from areas within Newberry County. Outdoor enthusiasts, service clubs, environmentalists and concerned citizens are encouraged to participate.

Volunteers should plan to meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Enoree Ranger office located at 20 Work Center Roads in Whitmire. PalmettoPride will supply gloves, vests and other supplies. Lunch will be served at noon for all volunteers.

This cleanup is another joint venture between the USDA Forest Service and PalmettoPride.  In October 2008, 30 volunteers came together to clean up litter from the forest in Union County removing over 10 tons of trash and over 40 tires.

“Our forest lands are so vulnerable to litter because so much of the land is not visible from the main roads,” said Gene Campbell, Program Manager for PalmettoPride.  “It is encouraging to see so many people care enough to clean up what others so carelessly leave behind.”
