For Immediate Release Media Contact: May 29, 2009 Sarah Robinson, 803-758-6034 Keep America Beautiful Affiliates to Improve Recycling in Their Communities Columbia, SC – Two Keep America Beautiful affiliates in South Carolina receive Nestle Waters North America grants for improving recycling activities in their communities. Keep Greenville County Beautiful and Keep Charleston Beautiful each received $10,000 to coordinate local programs aimed to improve “away-from-home” recycling activities. Keep Greenville County Beautiful will partner with Greater Greenville Sanitation Commission and Greenville County Recreation District to put recycling bins in 25 Greenville County Schools and six (6) Greenville County Recreation District Community Centers. Their grant activities will also feature educational programs at schools and community events to promote recycling. Keep Charleston Beautiful will focus their grant activities on building recycling stations at 4 popular city parks, which is phase one in a long-term plan to have recycling available at all 120 city parks. These first four (4) parks host the majority of public events and are used by both residents and tourists alike. “We are excited that two South Carolina affiliates received the Nestle Waters grants. Keep America Beautiful grants are highly competitive,” said Sarah Robinson, state leader for Keep South Carolina Beautiful, a division of PalmettoPride. “Perhaps the greatest benefit of ‘Recycle on the Go' grants, and any away-from-home recycling, is that it provides a strong and highly-visible reminder of the importance of recycling,” said Matthew McKenna, president and CEO of KAB. “Communities that support robust public space recycling are reinforcing their overall recycling awareness efforts and increasing their recycling rates from all sources.” Nestlé Waters North America worked with Keep America Beautiful to provide $10,000 “Recycle On The Go” grants to 12 Keep America Beautiful affiliates “to propose creative, comprehensive and sustainable concepts for public venue recycling of plastic beverage bottles”. More that 55 affiliates across the nation applied for the grants. -- more -- There are 25 local Keep America Beautiful affiliates in South Carolina.
