LAKE GREENWOOD CLEANUP EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

                LAKE GREENWOOD CLEANUP EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

Over 100 People Join in Cleanup Activities

Columbia, SC – Results from the first Lake Greenwood Cleanup Blitz have been tallied and exceed the expectations of the event planners.  Over 100 volunteers removed 114 bags of trash (2280 pounds) and 7 tires from around the lake shore.  1,300 pounds of trash and debris was taken to the Greenwood County Convenience Center.

Volunteers gathered at seven (7) locations around Lake Greenwood at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday May 16, 2009.   Along with the cleanup, SC DNR provided a boaters safety class to attendees.

After the cleanup, volunteers were treated to lunch at Greenwood State Park Pavilion #3 from the following vendors: Pepsi, McAllister's Deli, Piggly Wiggly, TW Boones, Greenwood Sandwich Company, Chick Fil A-Drive Thru, Honey Baked Ham, Ice Cream Floats.  Radio station WSSL-100.5 entertained the crowd with a live 2-hour radio remote.

“Everyone involved in the planning of this event couldn't be more pleased at the outpouring of support from volunteers and sponsors,” said Toni Able, Coordinator of Keep Greenwood County Beautiful.  “Cleaning up this lake has been an important issue not only for me, but for many others who call Greenwood home.”

This event was a coordinated effort by county and state agencies dedicated to improving quality of life and protecting the environment: Greenwood County Lake Management,

Keep Greenwood County Beautiful, Healthy Greenwood Neighborhoods, Greenwood County Government, Greenwood County Sheriff's Department, Greenwood City Police Department, Partnership Alliance, SCDNR, SCDHEC, Laurens County, and Palmetto Pride.   Greenwood County Councilman Rhett Dominick served as spokesperson for the event.

A 2010 Lake Greenwood Cleanup Blitz is scheduled for Saturday, March 6, 2010.   For more information on this event and other cleanups in Greenwood County, please contact Toni Able at 864-941-3370.   For information on statewide activities, please log onto www.palmettopride.org.
