Midlands Groups Team Up to Get Folks to Clean Up!

Columbia, SC – Keep the Midlands Beautiful and PalmettoPride are busy recruiting cities, neighborhoods and individuals to help create cleaner communities during the Midlands Pride Week Blitz.  The week-long community cleanup campaign brings citizens together to improve streets, neighborhoods, parks, schools and other public spaces by cleaning up litter and creating safer and healthier communities for everyone. 

Here are some facts you don't think about when you think about litter:

• Litter accumulates where there is already litter
• Cleaning up litter, graffiti, junk cars and illegal dumpsites deter criminal activity
• Cleaner neighborhoods make residents feel safer, friendlier and healthier
• Cleaner neighborhoods strengthen communities and improve quality of life.
• Cleaner communities improve real estate values and increase economic development

Midlands Pride Week Blitz encourages citizens to pick one day during the week of November 14 – 21, 2009, to organize a cleanup.  A few examples of these cleanups can be a whole neighborhood, a fun family day cleaning up your favorite park, youth clubs adopting a block, garden clubs adopting a block, or an individual picking up trash around his or her business during lunch.  Midlands Pride Week Blitz encourages schools and businesses to participate.

The Pride Week Blitz program is a signature cleanup program created by PalmettoPride to assist counties with volunteer recruitment, litter pickups and awareness building.  The Midlands Pride Week will be the 15^th Pride Week in the state.  More than 28,000 people have participated in past Pride Weeks picking up 525 tons of trash.
